Muirfield Golf Course
Overview
Muirfield Golf Course, located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, is home to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Established in 1891 by Old Tom Morris, the course underwent a significant redesign in 1925 by Harry Colt, incorporating an additional 50 acres to enhance its layout.
The course features a unique design with two loops of nine holes: the front nine runs clockwise around the perimeter, while the back nine runs counter-clockwise on an inner circuit. This arrangement ensures that golfers face varying wind directions throughout their rounds, providing a comprehensive test of skill.
Muirfield has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including 16 Open Championships and 11 Amateur Championships. Notable winners at Muirfield include golfing legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Nick Faldo.
The course measures just over 6,700 yards from the medal tees and 5,900 yards from the blue tees, accommodating golfers of varying abilities. With two par fives and two par threes on each nine, the layout offers a balanced challenge. Fairway landing areas are visible and relatively flat, and most 150 bunkers are in plain sight, ensuring well-executed shots are rewarded.
Visitors are welcome on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year. In the morning, teams compete in a fourball format, while in the afternoons for foursomes, where players alternate shots. Muirfield is a walking course with a strong caddie program; caddies are available if requested at least 24 hours in advance.
The clubhouse offers a three-course carvery lunch priced at £35 per person, served between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Outdoor seating on the terrace or balcony provides striking views for Fife.
Muirfield Golf Course offers a fair and balanced test of links golf in Scotland, making it a must-visit destination for golfers wanting a challenging and historic course.
